Real reason behind recall elections

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

There are two recall election attempts taking place in Maricopa County. One is trying to replace Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and the second is an attempt to recall Arizona House Minority Leader Chad Campbell.

"Sheriff Arpaio has been one of the most extreme politicians when it comes to issues of accountability. (He has) discriminated and profiled," said Randy Parraz, the president of Citizens for a Better Arizona, the non-profit group spearheading the movement against Arpaio.

On the other side of the political spectrum is Bob Thomas, who is helping drive a petition that could remove Democrat Campbell from the Arizona House of Representatives.

"Chad Campbell is misrepresenting," said Thomas

"The Second Amendment issues that he has promoted at the state capital are ridiculous and we won't stand for it anymore," Thomas continued.

Both of these recall efforts are happening just months after the election, before either politician has done much. In fact, the push to gather signatures to recall Arpaio began just weeks after he was sworn into his latest term.

"It's politics being politics," explained CBS 5 political analyst Dr. Bruce Merrill.

Merrill said there are two main reasons for the recalls.

"One is to circumvent to outcome of an election," explained Merrill.

"We just had a controversial election with Sheriff Joe (Arpaio). A lot of people didn't like the outcome, and this is being used in his case to change a decision that they didn't like. The second one that is going on here is the attempt to recall the minority leader in the House. That one appears to be more of a revenge-type motivation," said Merrill.

In an interview with CBS 5's Greg Argos, Thomas admitted revenge was part of the reason for the recall against Campbell.

"We didn't start this fight, but we've been pushed around and bullied that it's time to fight back," said Thomas.

"You're saying the only reason you're trying to recall Chad Campbell is because of the recall for Arpaio?" asked Argos.

"I didn't say that was the only reason. That is one of the reasons," Thomas responded.

Both recall efforts do not yet have enough valid signatures to trigger a recall election. Stay with CBS 5 for the latest on both of these efforts.
