A Peoria police officer was arrested March 6 on suspicion of pushing and choking his wife, a court document stated.
Thomas Shockley, 41, of Phoenix, was booked into jail on charges of domestic violence related assault and aggravated assault. He also faces a disorderly conduct charge.
The pair was engaged in an argument at their home, according to a probable cause statement. At some point, Shockley began pushing and choking her, the court document stated.
When she fell to the ground, Shockley restrained her arms by holding them to the ground, according to the document.
It's unknown whether Shockley was impaired at the time of the alleged incident, the court document stated.
Shockley was put on paid administrative leave. He has been with the force for 14 years.
"Our officers are not to engage in any conduct that would be unbecoming of an officer," said Amanda Jacinto with the Peoria Police Department.
You may wonder what happens to a police officer's state certification after something like this happens. Well, the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board meets once a month. They hear the cases, mostly after they are adjudicated, and decide if an officer keeps his or her certification.
At just last month's meeting alone, the board heard four different cases of domestic violence involving cops.
We started wondering if there was an increase in these kinds of crimes, so we filed public records requests with the Phoenix Police Department, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. So far MCSO is the only agency to have fulfilled the request.
We tried reaching out to some family members of Shockley's to reach him, but so far have been unable to talk to him.
