An elderly couple was pulled to safety from a swollen creek in Tonto National Forest by an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter Sunday.
The couple had driven into the creek full of cold mountain runoff near Punkin Center when the Ford F150 began floating downstream, according to a DPS news release. The Gila County Sheriff's Department called DPS and the chopper took off from Tucson.
The man was found sitting on the driver's side window and was suffering from the cold of the high-mountain snowmelt, according to the release.
A DPS paramedic was lowered to the pickup, and a woman was helped into the helicopter as it hovered over the truck, according to the release.
The paramedic broke through the truck's rear window to help the driver, who was placed in a rescue ring and flown to the shore about 50 yards away, according to the release.
Both victims were turned over to the Tonto Basin Fire Department paramedics. Their condition was not known.
