Group launches recall of House minority leader

A group has launched a recall effort targeting Arizona House Minority Leader Chad Campbell.

A filing with the Arizona Secretary of State's office Tuesday by the group called Fire Representative Chad Campbell launched an official signature gathering effort. The group has until July 10 to collect more than 11,500 signatures. If they are successful, a recall election will then be called.

Campbell is one of the most visible Democrats in the state and has been considering a run for governor. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2006.

The filing of a recall committee doesn't mean the group has the ability politically to gather enough signatures.

Campbell released the following statement:

"You may have heard that yesterday, an extreme Tea Party group launched a recall campaign against me.

"The same group that led the charge looking for President Obama's birth certificate is now attacking my pragmatic approach to creating jobs, strengthening education, and keeping our schools and neighborhoods safe. This is just another example of the extreme brand of Tea Party Republicans who are incapable of providing the leadership necessary to move Arizona forward.

"In the past 12 hours, I have been inundated with messages from friends and colleagues - of both support and outrage. With the many challenges our state is facing, this effort is irrational and misplaced, but I am looking forward to debating my ideas against those of Tea Party extremists. I will not back down in my efforts to build a strong future for Arizona.

"Thank you for your support - it means a great deal to me. As this campaign develops, I will keep you posted with how you can get involved."

Another group is collecting signatures in an effort to recall Republican Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
