(RNN) - The cardinals meeting to select a new pope are continuing their private deliberations Wednesday at the Vatican.

Wednesday morning, a thick, heavy, black smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney, indicating the cardinals have yet to agree on a pope.

As the band of 115 elite men ages 59-80 contemplate the future of the 1.2 billion-member Catholic church for a second day, thousands stood in the cold under an overcast sky in St. Peter's Square and waited.

Millions more from across the globe watched the proceedings via television and internet.
