BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A third generation Biloxi welder will use his skills Wednesday to repair a important thoroughfare in the city.
Beginning around 7:30pm, welder Dann Balius will spend about four hours replacing the temporary steel plates he installed weeks ago on Biloxi's Popp's Ferry Bridge to fill in sections where grating was worn.
"We're going to remove the plates that we installed, then cut out the fatigued grating, and replace it with this new material, which isn't beat up from the constant traffic," said Balius, who fashioned metal bars a half-inch thick by 2 1/2 inches wide to create the new grating.
While Balius comes from a long line of welders, his family is better known for crafting oyster dredges and specialty welding jobs such as spiral staircases, fences or metal tables.
"We're proud to be called on to do this," Balius said, "and we're going to make sure we do a good job on these repairs."
