FOUNTAIN HILLS, AZ (AP/CBS5) -

Seven cans of ammunition containing explosive devices have been recovered by authorities in a desert area east of Phoenix.

Maricopa County sheriff's spokesman Brandon Jones said the devices consisted of grenades, two handguns and ammunition.

A note found earlier Tuesday turned out to be an inventory list, and Maricopa County sheriff's deputies are now checking the contents of those boxes against the inventory list.

A map was also found and authorities believed it pointed to explosives in other locations. After further investigation, deputies think that most of the marks on the map were target shooting locations.

The case unfolded late Monday night when deputies detonated what appeared to be live hand grenades discovered at a site on the Tonto National Forest.

Jones said the hikers who reported finding the grenades also found several canisters with ammunition for guns.

According to Jones, about 25 county and federal law enforcement officers participated in the search.
