PHOENIX (CBS5) -

One person is dead and two others injured after a pickup truck slammed into a semitrailer on Interstate 17 at Jomax Road, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

A 13-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene. An 11-year-old was stabilized at John C. Lincoln Hospital before being transported to Children's Phoenix Hospital, DPS said. Their father suffered critical injuries, according to officers. No names have been released.

Pictures from our news helicopter showed the pickup was totaled.

The family was traveling from Rock Springs when the driver of the pickup started drifting and struck the semitrailer that had stopped on the side of the road because of a flat tire, according to DPS spokesman Bart Graves.

There was also a tow truck behind them and the driver had to react quickly to avoid the accident, Graves said. The driver didn't suffer any injuries but was transported to the hospital as a precaution.

The semitrailer driver escaped injury.

The southbound lanes of I-17 were closed for three hours at Jomax Road. Southbound traffic was forced to exit the freeway at the Loop 303. Drivers traveling into Phoenix ended up taking Loop 303 to U.S. 60 eastbound.

Just before 6 p.m., the lanes reopened, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

No other information is available at this time.
