That word comes from a George County Sheriff's deputy.  Socks succumbed to injuries suffered after 20-year-old Brandon Pierce allegedly set his dog on fire Tuesday night. The suspect told deputies he torched the dog because he "wanted to help the dog go to heaven."
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Sophomore shortstop Joey Pankake has been named SEC Player of the Week. 

He hit .438 (7-for-16) in the five games with four homers, seven runs scored and nine RBI. Pankake hit a pair of three-run homers in each of the wins over Ball State. He then homered in both Saturday and Sunday's victories over Rider.

For the season, Pankake is hitting .326 (15-for-46) with four homers, 14 RBI and 11 runs scored. He is currently on a seven-game hitting streak.

Pankake is the second Gamecock player this year to earn the honors.  LB Dantzler was an honoree by the conference on Feb. 25.

He was also named "Louisville Slugger's" National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball and is among three other players to earn the honor.
