BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -
The fire in the wooded area near the Canal Road exit and I-10 is now under control. Authorities said many people thought the fire, which started Tuesday around 5:30 a.m., was a prescribed burn, but that isn't the case.
Mississippi Forestry Commission crews are on the scene monitoring hot spots.
According to Harrison County Fire Marshal Pat Sullivan, more than 195 acres burned. That area is close to the Flying J and Magnolia Inn just south of I-10.
"They [Mississippi Forestry Commission] told me they thought the fire was started by transients living in the woods. The Mississippi Forestry Commission took over the fire and have been working it all night," Sullivan said.
Although a majority of the fire has been put out, there's still smoke. There have been no reports of injuries or structures being destroyed.
Harrison County firefighters assisted, but Mississippi Forestry Commission fire crews handled most of the fire.
