GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Investigators now believe a fatal shooting Monday night in Gulfport was a case of a man acting in self-defense.

Authorities were called to a home in the 3900 block of Monterey Drive around 8:20pm Monday after neighbors heard shots being fired. When officers arrived, they found Damien Lezedrick Thompson, 31, dead from a gunshot wound to the chest. The man who lived at the home was in the yard, unarmed, and surrendering to officers.

Investigators said Thompson came to the home and started arguing with the resident, making threatening comments. He then forced his way in to the home, at which point the man told officers he feared for his life.

The man who fired the gun is not being identified, and police aren't saying how many shots were fired or if Thompson was armed. Officials said the case is still under investigation and the findings will be presented to a grand jury.
