School Supplies Hopefully Equals Student Success

Many of these students say they're excited about the beginning of the school year.

"I like hanging out with my friends and learning at the same time," said D'Iberville Elementary third grader A'Leah Barnes.

And now, A'Leah and the others will be able to start the year off right with the tools of success.

"We do the little nap bags, pencils, crayons, rulers, protractors. We try to get a variety of everything that's on the school lists that we pick up from the various areas," said event chairperson Nell Davis.

The Daughters of Elks Gulf Coast Temple 471, along with the help of the brothers of lodge number 576, held its annual back-to-school supply giveaway Saturday afternoon at the Vernon Gilbert Elks lodge in Biloxi.

Kindergartners through ninth graders were able to pick up their sacks filled with the supplies they need to hopefully have a prosperous school year.

"It is the impression that we give to the community that we put back in the community dollars, and we do this by giving to the children as they go back to school," said elks lodge 576 exalted ruler Calvin Glover.

Glover hopes one day, these students will grow up to do the same good deed for future generations.

But until then, the only thoughts on the minds of these youngsters are praying for good school year filled with good grades.

This was the organization's sixth year for the supply giveaway.

Organizers raised enough money to buy supplies for 100 local students.
