GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) -
For the first time Gautier has a girls power lifting team. Yes, girls. The 11 member team is so good they are heading to South State Championship. On Sunday, they let Patrice Clark sit in on their early morning practice.
If you thought power lifting was just for boys think again. Meet teenager Teresa Thigpen. She is only 97 pounds, but can lift almost twice her weight.
"It's pretty impressive to do more than my weight," Teresa Thigpen said.
Dominique Casey said she can dead lift nearly 300 pounds.
"Guy's ain't the only people who are strong," Casey said.
These two strong lifters are part of the all girl power lifting team at Gautier High. Bailey Cuevas is the coach and has been waking up at 6 a.m. since October to train the girls.
"Our shirts say, strong is beautiful. So our girls can do just as much as boys can do," Coach Bailey Cuevas said.
The 11 member team is constantly proving that. The girls recently won the district championship. Now the champs are going for the South State Crown, and they already predicting a win.
"I have two people I have to beat, which I know I will be able to do it," Thigpen said.
"I looked at the girls in my weight class and I know I can easily over take them. So, it is more of a confidence thing," Casey said.
Self confidence is one of many qualities each teenage lifter is building in the weight room.
"It keeps the girls in shape and this keeps mental toughness and mental focus for all the girls," said Coach Cuevas. "We have over a 3.0 GPA; we have a scholar athletic team and this is our first year doing this. We are really excited.
Excited and motivated to do their best no matter the heavy workload. The girls head to the South State Championship Thursday. The competition begins at 2 p.m. at Meridian High School.
