Vicksburg police want semi-automatic guns

Posted: Updated:

VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong is looking to buy AR-15 or AK-47-type assault rifles for his department.

Armstrong says he's trying to put his officers on par with suspects who might have more powerful weapons.

The Vicksburg Post reports that city officials this week agreed to advertise for bids for semi-automatic weapons and magazines.

Officials say money for the weapons will come from the sale of 200 weapons seized or recovered by police and money left from a recent arms sale.

Armstrong says the weapons will be sold through bids to a licensed federal arms dealer.

Armstrong says currently, he said, the police department's most high-powered weapon is a shotgun. He says the new weapons will be distributed throughout the department.
