Former U.S. Secretary of Education addresses MS colleges

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The former U.S. Secretary of Education and the nation's first drug czar Dr. William Bennett offered some candid comments to a packed room of Mississippi college and junior college educators and administrators Tuesday.

Bennett was the keynote speaker for the 26th annual Higher Education Appreciation day. He specifically said there are questions about what the American public is getting for it's investment. He said Mississippi is no different from the rest of the nation when it comes to results and what's expected.

"When you are talking about public dollars, tight public dollars, family dollars, we are talking about one of the things that's really driving the debate, student indebtedness, the amount of money kids owe when they get out of school, and they can't get jobs. This is what's driving the questions," Bennett said.

Bennett taught philosophy at the University of Southern Mississippi in the late 1960's.
