GREGG COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Former Gregg County Sheriff Tom H. Welch was found dead in his home this afternoon, according to authorities. Authorities said they are conducting a "death investigation." Right now, the circumstances surrounding his death are not clear.

Welch served as the sheriff of Gregg County from 1972 until December 1979, when he resigned. Sheriff Welch and four other Gregg County officials were convicted in 1979 for corruption charges. Welch and two others were also convicted of federal murder-conspiracy.
