SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
An East Texas mail processing center will be closing in June, creating a delay in the time to send a letter or package.
According to documents from the US Postal Service, the facility in northern Smith County will close on June 1. It was announced the facility would close in February 2012.
In September 2011, KLTV's Melanie Torre interviewed USPS spokesperson McKinney Boyd regarding the announcement. During that interview, Boyd said, "The ETX processing and distribution facility is responsible for processing more than 100,000 pieces of mail each day from a number of post offices in and around the Tyler/Longview area. It also processes packages and parcels and tubes that customers deposit at their local post offices. This processing and distribution center not only processes incoming mail, it also processes outgoing mail. That mail that comes in to many of the post services that are served by the East Texas Tyler facility actually receives mail each day for the delivery of many of our customers. This facility serves more than fifty- or sixty thousand customers in the East Texas area, so it is a vital facility that has served our customers well for a number of years."
Beginning in June 2013, mail from zip codes starting with '756' will be sent to the USPS Shreveport facility, zip codes starting with '757' will go to the USPS North Texas facility in Coppell and zip codes starting with '758' will be sent to the USPS Austin facility.
When the facility was put on the closure list in 2012, postal service officials said closing the Smith County facility will save the agency $14 million annually.
