JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Mississippi politicians have been in the national spotlight in recent weeks, with some not so glowing reviews.
You may recall the Saturday Night Live skit that likened the legislature to 30 hissing opossums in a barn after Governor Phil Bryant came out against President Barack Obama's gun control proposals.
Most recently The Daily Show with Jon Stewart discussed the state's failure to send in the proper paper work to the Federal Register when Mississippi lawmakers ratified the 13th Amendment in 1995. There was even a segment on the Colbert Report recently.
One state senator believes Mississippi is often misunderstood, and usually visitors have a different take on the stereotype that plagues the Magnolia State once they have visited.
"We have a history that we cannot deny here in Mississippi and it is time to move past that. I think we have an entirely new generation of leaders in state government, local government, and I think we are all working to overcome a lot of that. We seem to sometimes shoot ourselves in the foot," said Senator Sally Doty.
Doty points Mississippi's success in luring world class manufacturers and leaders in the arts as points of state pride and progress.
