ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office says a man died around nine o'clock Sunday morning after getting caught in a conveyer belt. The accident happened at Impala's Burnside Terminal.

The victim is identified as 52-year-old Nolan Cormier. Investigators say EMTs responded to the scene quickly, but Cormier was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales.

The accident is currently under investigation. A spokesperson for Impala said operations at the plant are temporarily suspended. 

Here is the full statement from the company:

"At approximately 9:00a.m. (CST) today, we can confirm that an accident occurred at Impala's Burnside Terminal in Louisiana in which a contractor was fatally injured. 

In spite of the fast intervention by the medical services, the contractor was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Gonzales, Louisiana. 

As stated in an Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office news release, the accident occurred near the conveyor belt area of the plant. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident. Operations are currently suspended at the Burnside plant.

Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased at this difficult time."
