JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A train derailment halted passenger and freight traffic on a major line south of Jackson Friday.

The Canadian National Railway train cars derailed around 6:48 a.m. near McDowell Road. Heavy equipment was brought in to remove the 18 train cars that were scattered along the tracks.

Canadian National Spokesman Patrick Waldron says 17 of the derailed cars were filled with grain and the other was empty.

Rail officials say some of the track appears to have been damaged and will need to be replaced.

The entire rail system between Jackson and New Orleans was closed Friday. Amtrak's City of New Orleans was rerouted through Hattiesburg.

It's unclear what caused the derailment or how long the section of track will be closed.
