GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Election time is quickly approaching. Billy Hewes opened his campaign headquarters Thursday night. Hewes is the former long time state senator and is now running for mayor of Gulfport.
The ribbon was cut, marking the beginning of a race that Hewes said he's wanted to be a part of for a long time.
Hewes said he's running for mayor because he has a deep seated love for his hometown.
His office is on 500 Courthouse Road. Hewes called it a central location, accessible to the people of Gulfport.
Hewes was running unopposed until Wednesday when John C. Mann entered the race. He's a democrat. Opponents have until March 8th to qualify.
The primary election is in early May. The general election June 4th.
"Gulfport is at a great place right now. We've had some great leadership in the past and I hope to have the opportunity to continue that legacy. There are a lot of opportunities before us. I just want to build on the success that we've had and use my experience as having grown up here and my contacts throughout the state to help Gulfport become more than it already is," said Hewes.
The current mayor, George Schloegel, is not running for re-election. The next Gulfport mayor will take office July 1st.
