Tyler, Texas -

At its regularly scheduled board meeting Thursday night, the Tyler ISD board unanimously approved putting a $160.5 million bond on the City of Tyler's May ballot.

The bond proposal would renovate Dixie and Rice Elementary schools and add a career and technology center, like one at a district at Ft. Worth that offers cosmetology and health science classes.

All six TISD board members approved the bond proposal at Thursday night's meeting.

The group Tyler Proud rallied in favor of the bond before the meeting. They believe the time for action is now and tell us that voting yes on the bond will turn TISD into a better school district and make Tyler a better community.

"When we look at our daughter we think that she is the future, and so are her classmates, and they are worth investing in," says Maureen Kaiser, a TISD mother and member of Tyler Proud.

Others at the meeting believe the school district's problems run much deeper than their buildings. They say the school board is simply putting old problems in new buildings.

"We are not against positive change, but lets be sure and very sure that this change is beneficial to every student, every parent, and every concerned citizen in Tyler, Texas," says Gloria Washington, who spoke out against the bond at the meeting.

Before the school board voted they assured everyone that just because the bond is on the May ballot does not mean the conversation about the issue is over.

The district also discussed several other items to improve TISD campuses, including building a fence around Robert E. Lee High School. That item was approved.
