Some Jackson County supervisors don't want to see people carrying guns in parks and other public areas despite a new gun law in the state. As WLOX has reported, starting July 1st Mississippians will be able to openly carry a gun and other weapons with or without a permit.   Some Jackson county leaders want to create a local ordinance to keep weapons in check.

Last week, we all watched with empathy, the hardship for the passengers stuck on the disabled Carnival cruise ship as it was towed into Mobile. There were bad conditions on board. It was 5 days of no electricity and overflowing toilets. But the crew is to be commended for avoiding a huge tragedy by stopping an engine room fire from spreading and possibly losing the entire ship.

When bad things happen, we want to do something to fix it, to make sure it does not happen again. Maybe more health and safety measures would have made it better for the thousands of stranded passengers.

But as our leaders consider what to do, we hope they will use common sense and not create unnecessary, cumbersome regulations. When dealing with the federal government, we say "be careful what you wish for- you may get it."

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
