(RNN) - President Obama gave his State of the Union address this week, outlining the progress his administration has made and what he hopes to achieve over the next year.

However, Obama's legislative plans shared the spotlight with news far beyond Capitol Hill.

Police in Big Bear, CA were able to pin down suspected cop-killer Michael Dorner after he took refuge in a cabin.

Dorner's body was found after the cabin was set on fire.

Thousands of miles away, a crippled Carnival cruise ship was towed into an Alabama port after an on-board fire disabled the ship's engines and electrical system.

Governments from around the world watched as North Korea conducted its third nuclear test, causing tremors felt hundreds of miles away.

Meanwhile, Pope Benedict XVI announced he will resign from the papacy effective Feb. 28, adding that he feels he does not have the strength to serve.
