HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
Plant Eaton began operating in 1945, but
after delivering power to customers for nearly 70 years, Mississippi Power
retired the facility at the end of 2012.
The plant was known as a high-tech facility when
it first began operating, but according to Mississippi Power Air Quality
Supervisor Tony Smith, the technology that was imbedded and engineered into the
facility has been surpassed by newer technology, and the company feels it's
best to retire Plant Eaton and move on to newer technology.
"When Plant Eaton was constructed, Plant Eaton
was a big step to move Mississippi Power into a new era of power generation
with state-of-the-art technology," said Smith. "Kemper is going to do that very
same thing and support providing our customers with reliable, low cost energy
for the future."
Mississippi Power's new 21st century coal
technology, Kemper County Energy facility, is nearly 75 percent complete and is
scheduled for commercial operation in May 2014.
