GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

After 26 years with the Gulfport Police Department, Chief Alan Weatherford is retiring.

Weatherford spent the last seven years as chief of police, directing the day to day operations of Gulfport's police force. The 1984 Gulfport High School graduate started with Gulfport's Explorer program.

Friends who attended his retirement party read this quote about Weatherford, "Chief Weatherford has proven his dedication throughout his career with the Gulfport Police Department, but his true commitment and loyalty is to his family."

Weatherford was a driving force behind turning a Gaston Point bar that catered to drug dealers into a home for children to learn, have fun, and trust the police. That building on Old Pass Road now houses the Gulfport Police Athletic League. It was announced Thursday that the building will be renamed to honor the retiring chief.
