Fog possible factor in deadly crash involving school bus

POINTE COUPEE PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

Authorities said heavy fog may have played a part in a head-on collision between an SUV and school bus that left a woman dead Tuesday morning.

The crash happened on LA 415 (River Road) north of LA 416 in Pointe Coupee Parish.

The Louisiana State Police said an SUV on River Road veered across the center line and slammed into the school bus. The woman driving the SUV, 38-year-old Ventress, LA resident Jody T. Harris, did not survive.

Superintendent Linda D'Amico said there were nine students on the school bus. The driver and three children were taken to a Baton Rouge hospital with minor injuries. The other children were taken to a hospital in the Pointe Coupee Parish area to be checked out.

"It's our policy that children need to be examined even if they don't have obvious injuries," said D'Amico.

All the were then sent home with their parents.

"They were scared and there was some crying," D'Amico said.  She added at the hospital, the younger children were playing with toys and did not seem to be affected.

Some of the 3-year-old and 4-year-old kids on the bus were in seatbelts. The oldest student on the bus is believed to be nine years old. The school board will have counselors on hand in case any of the children saw anything.

LA 415 was closed for a few hours because of the wreck.

The crash remains under investigation.
