The Gulfport School District Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Eddie Pierce as Gulfport High head football coach. A few weeks ago Mike Justice announced that he was retiring which opened the door for Pierce.
When Justice suffered a heart attack, early in the 2012 high school football season, Pierce was named interim head coach and he guided the Admirals to 7 consecutive wins before losing to Oak Grove in the Class 6A State Playoffs.
He worked 16 years with the Jones County Community College football program.
The interview committee was highly impressed with coach Pierce's commitment to mentor and work with the student-athletes on the Gulfport High School campus. According to the committee, his mentoring set him apart from other candidates during the interview process.
Pierce will be preparing the Admirals for spring football drills.
The selection of Pierce was obvious. He proved his coaching ability during the regular season and the Admiral players are familiar with his coaching style and he proved he can win and win quickly.
Thumbs up to the Gulfport School District Board of Trustees for making the right decision.
