Gov. Bryant declares Severe Weather Preparedness Week

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi is in the middle of a deadly tornado zone and that's one reason Governor Phil Bryant has declared this week Severe Weather Preparedness Week.

The tornado zone stretches from Little Rock, Arkansas to Birmingham, Alabama.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service says Mississippi is at or near the top of nearly all tornado statistics including total tornadoes, strong to violent tornadoes and long track tornadoes. Also, the frequency of tornadoes rises rapidly from mid February through April.

According to MEMA, every Mississippi resident should have one or more methods to receive severe weather warnings like a weather radio, a phone based warning system or a mobile device app.
