Keesler makes big announcement during ribbon cutting

Posted: Updated:

Keesler Air Force Base has a new state of the art medical facility. Patients were moved into the Back Bay Tower last month, but an official ribbon cutting was held Friday to show off the building and to share some exciting news.

Shortly before the ribbon was cut on the Back Bay Tower, the Commander of the 81st Medical Group, Korey Cornum, stood in front of the crowd to make a big announcement.

"We are back to being Keesler Medical Center," Cornum said as the crowd clapped and cheered.

Cornum credits the hard work of his staff for allowing the hospital to be upgraded to a medical center, which it was prior to Hurricane Katrina.

"What that means is the Air Force and Department of Defense recognizes the things we do here providing great patient care and deployment platform for medics," Cornum said.

Congressman Steven Palazzo said the medical center is also good for the community because it makes South Mississippi even more attractive to military families.

"Not only our active duty members, but to our retirees that call South Mississippi home, and the tens of thousands of students that go through Keesler every year. And it's just another great quality of life addition," Palazzo said.

The new wing of the medical center offers a modern look and top of the line equipment.

Cornum said, "A new cardiac catheterization suite, two new state of the art operating rooms, a new beautiful ER along with intensive care unit and two new inpatient wards."

"It's almost like if you want to get sick, this is the place to be," Palazzo said with a smile. "This is going to save lives and also give people who work here opportunities to use the best equipment in the world."

Cornum has moved into three new medical facilities in his career and said it is amazing how it improves moral and health.

"The attitude of not only the patients, but the staff improves, and patient care really does get better," Cornum said.
