WLOX Editorial: Welcome to the coast

Posted: Updated:

"Welcome to the Coast," my predecessor, here at WLOX, Dave Vincent used those words when I first visited almost 20 years ago.  I immediately felt welcome and understood the identity of the region.

It's not just Biloxi, Gulfport, Pascagoula or any of the cities or counties that make up South Mississippi.  It's not just seafood industry, or the boat and ship building or the tourism and entertainment, or every retail operation. It's a feeling, a way of life, or if you will, the attitude of the people.

"You have seen us at our worst," another phase I have heard in recent weeks from those I worked with here in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Yes, what we all saw was horrible devastation, loss and hurt. The buildings, the roads, the land and infrastructure- yeah, I would agree, I saw that at its worst, but the people? No way, I saw you all at your best, helping one another in the most difficult of times.

And what a transition the region has made and continues to make because the people came back strong with continuing optimism for a bright future in South Mississippi. I share that optimism as I now call this home.  So to other newcomers and visitors, I proudly say, "Welcome to the Coast."

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
