CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Union supporters along with actor Danny Glover held a rally Tuesday night at Tougaloo College to criticize Nissan Motor Company.
The pro-union workers say Nissan has threatened to close its Canton plant if workers vote for United Auto Works to represent them.
If true, such threats would violate federal law, which bars managers from telling employees they'll close a plant in retaliation for a pro-union vote.
Nissan denies such threats saying it "follows the law and always has." Nissan released a statement Tuesday night saying less than 1% of its workforce attended the event Tuesday night.
"Nissan respects our employees and their right to choose a union. The simple fact is that the overwhelming majority of our workforce do not have share the viewpoints of the small group who attended the event tonight," the statement said.
Employees have yet to file a petition for election. In the meantime, the union is trying to push Nissan to allow it to present its case to workers. Nissan has refused.
