BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) -

Cyclist Chris Nicholas says everyone has a calling, his just happens to be on the open road. Nicholas is biking across the country hoping to raise awareness for others in need.

With a GPS, people can track Chris Nicholas' every move as he cycles more than 6,000 miles from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon.

The cross country trip is his way to increase awareness of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, St. Jude Children's Hospital and The Wounded Warrior Project.

"You're amazed at how many people you do interact with that has someone in the armed forces or that has a relative or child that has been in the hospital, or even someone that might not be able to live much longer than a few years," says Nicholas.

Runners and cyclists follow his journey on Facebook, Twitter, and his website: http://www.runandfinish.com/. Holly Purvis said she wanted the chance to be part of something bigger than herself.

"I can't imagine the mental challenge that he's having to endure aside from the physical one," said Purvis. "I think when people come out and join him for a moment it probably sets his day to a different tone."

The journey is mentally anguishing and can be physically draining. But Nicholas said the support he's seen from South Mississippians is like no other.
