Non-profit builds new home for wounded veteran

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Many soldiers wounded in battle may have thought their lives were over, but not Sgt. Chaz Allen.

The Fort Campbell soldier, who lost both legs and an elbow while serving in Afghanistan, is celebrating a new start.

Two prosthetic legs and a reconstructed arm couldn't hold back Chaz Allen's enthusiasm as he talked about his new house, all courtesy of non-profit agency Helping a Hero.

His family knew their current two-story home in Clarksville could not adequately accommodate him when Allen returned home after a lengthy hospital stay.

"The house is not adapted for Chaz's needs at all. It's kind of a nightmare to get around. So we've made some very subtle alterations so far, just to help him navigate through it," said wife Jessica Allen.

That's when the folks at Helping a Hero stepped in.

Soon, a 10-acre piece of land in Jessica Allen's hometown of McMinnville will be converted into the veteran's own personal sanctuary.

It's a way to say thank you for a hard fought battle to recovery.

"He's amazing. I can't imagine what it's like to have the courage to lose your legs and keep going on, and he amazes me every single day," Jessica Allen said.

Helping a Hero is building homes in 21 different states. Two of those have already been built in Tennessee, and a third will start going up this spring in Clarksville.
