Marine Resources chairman: Keeping an open mind on new executive director

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The state senator who chairs the "Marine Resources" committee says he's keeping an open mind about who he'd like to see chosen as the new executive director of the Department of Marine Resources (DMR).

Senator Brice Wiggins says the "Commission on Marine Resources" must still submit the names of three candidates to the governor.

You'll recall former DMR Director Bill Walker was fired by the commission, amid an ongoing investigation into DMR finances and procedures under his leadership.

Some people have suggested the CMR commissioners should also be replaced for failing to properly oversee DMR operations.

We asked Senator Brice Wiggins of Pascagoula (R) about that idea.

"You know, that's a good question. I think in a situation like this, we have to look at everything. I certainly think that there were issues, to say the least, on oversight. And you know, that's something that we need to look at," Wiggins said.

The chairman of the "Commission on Marine Resources" said he would call a public meeting to discuss possible candidates for the DMR vacancy.

No date has been set for that special meeting.
