BURNSIDE, LA (WAFB) -
The Louisiana State Police is investigating a deadly single-vehicle crash in Ascension Parish in which a 5-year-old was killed.
It happened on LA 44 at Loosemore Road near the town of Burnside around 7:45 a.m.
Troopers said the driver, 30-year-old Anthony K. Andrews of Sorrento, lost control in a curve and went off the road. They added the child who died, Makell Andrews, was not properly restrained and was partially ejected from the vehicle.
According to Louisiana State Troopers, Andrews failed to negotiate a left hand curve and his vehicle ran off the
roadway to the right. After leaving the roadway, Andrews attempted to steer his
vehicle back onto the roadway causing it to roll.
LA 44 was closed between LA 22 and LA 941 for a while, but was reopened around 9:45 a.m.
Driver impairment is not suspected, however, Troopers have submitted a toxicology sample from Andrews to the LSP Crime Lab for analysis. The wreck is still being investigated.
People who live along LA 44 say they've asked state officials for months to do something about the number of accidents they see.
One neighbor said this is the seventh crash on that roadway in just a few weeks.
"It's a question of how many is too many," said Councilman Kent Schexnaydre of the Ascension Parish Council. "Unfortunately, if nothing's done, this won't be the last. It's just a sad thing. I wake up getting scared every morning that somebody in my family is going to come out right down the road into all these same conditions. It's scary."
Neighbors stated at the very least they would like rumble strips to warn drivers to slow down and pay attention in the curve.
