Man killed when Amtrak train hits car

HAZLEHURST, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

49 year-old Tommy Jackson's silver Mercedes is a mangled piece of metal after an Amtrak train collided with it on the Frost Street railroad crossing, about 4:30 Friday afternoon.

"At this time, this is the initial stages of this investigation and this case is still under investigation," explained Hazlehurst Police Chief Byron Swilley.

He says it's unclear why the car was on the tracks at the time of the collision.

The Hazlehurst man was the only person in the car.

Witnesses say when Jackson's car was struck, the train dragged it more nearly a half a mile down the tracks.

Brown's Wrecker Service employee Matthew Emfinger described what he saw after the crash.

"The car was stuck to the front of the train," Emfinger said.

Hazlehurst police and Canadian Northern Railway investigators spent Friday evening looking for damage, along with clues.

There are no crossing guards at the intersection but there are crossing signals and flashing red lights. It's unclear if they were working when the crash occurred.

"Bout 10 years ago it was another accident here headed southbound. This incident here was headed northbound," said Swilley.

No one on the train was injured, according to Amtrak.

Hazlehurst police and the railroad are investigating the crash.

The City of New Orleans train travels daily between New Orleans and Chicago and goes through Jackson.
