Biloxi 2-year-old dies from Hwy 90 crash injuries

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

A 2-year-old girl who was severely injured in a car accident Wednesday in Ocean Springs has died.

Josalyn Anderson had to be airlifted to the University of South Alabama Medical Center Wednesday night because her injuries were so severe.

Investigators said Josalyn's mother, Melanie Anderson, 27, of Biloxi, was driving while Josalyn was standing in the back seat.

The investigating officer said the pair had just left the Ocean Springs Civic Center on their way to get something to eat. The mother turned around to say something to her daughter. When she looked back, the vehicle in front of her had stopped for traffic, and a four car, chain reaction collision ensued.

Investigators said the impact threw the child into the front seat where she hit the airbags and bounced back into the rear of the vehicle.

Melanie Anderson was cited for driving under a suspended license, no insurance, expired tag, no Seatbelt and no child restraint. The accident is still under investigation, and more charges could follow. Police did take blood from Anderson to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved.

At 7:30 Wednesday morning, Ocean Springs city workers stepped up to the city hall flag pole. They hooked Mississippi's state flag underneath the American flag, and they raised both flags over the city hall grounds. And just like that, five days of debate over whether the state flag should fly in Ocean Springs temporarily came to an end.
