Gulfport reconsiders scenic byway designation for Hwy 90

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Gulfport leaders are taking another look at a move to make Highway 90 a scenic byway.

The council previously voted to support the special designation. But now, leaders worry a scenic byway could put too many restrictions on future development along 90.

The scenic byway program could make certain federal funds available, but would restrict signs and billboard for businesses.

Mayor George Schloegel said he wants to find out exactly what controls the city would have to give up. No vote was taken at Tuesday's City Council meeting.
