South MS a super bargain for Super Bowl visitors

The Super Bowl teams are set. And now, fans from Baltimore and San Francisco are trying to figure out if they can afford a weekend on the Gulf Coast to see Super Bowl 47.

We went on line to see what it would cost a fan to spend the weekend in New Orleans and attend the events surrounding the big game.  As of Monday, the cheapest ticket to the Super Bowl on Stubhub was $2,125.  If you go to the NFL Experience, that's another $25.

If you need a hotel room, good luck.  Most hotels around New Orleans Super Bowl weekend are sold out.  The one hotel we did find on St. Charles Avenue will cost a 49er or Ravens fan $2,000 a night.

By comparison, most of the hotels we found on the Mississippi Gulf Coast tourism website are charging a football fan less than $200 a night. And the hotels in South Mississippi do have vacancies Super Bowl weekend.

"We also have an agreement with the local housing bureau that is taking reservations for a two night minimum and offering motorcoach free transportation to the Big Easy for the big game," Harrison County Tourism Director Beth Carriere explained. "We have goodie bags to the organizers for these packages and coupon books for meals and shopping and information on the MS Gulf Coast."

And coast tourism leaders did their planning in advance. As of last week, they had already placed merchandise orders for all four of the playoff teams just to ensure they had the  right merchandise for visiting fans.
