Jennifer’s articles take readers through the family’s journey through months of treatment that included surgery, chemotherapy, participating in a clinical trial, pain and exhaustion. Her father’s cancer currently is stable.

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that affects the lining of the lungs – known as the “pleura.” It is diagnosed in about 3,000 Americans each year. Patients contract the disease by being exposed to asbestos, usually through employment in industrial, manufacturing or construction work decades prior to diagnosis.
Asbestos is a fire-resistant material that was once widely used as an insulator in hundreds of products despite the fact that it was known to be a carcinogen since the first quarter of the 20th century.
After he was diagnosed with mesothelioma in January, Smitley underwent surgery and participated in a clinical trial at New York University’s Langone Medical Center, a nationally recognized mesothelioma research and treatment center. He was treated by mesothelioma expert Dr. Harvey Pass. He also received chemotherapy and radiation in an attempt to shrink his mesothelioma tumors.
Smitley said previously that he experienced “serious pain” at a level he never expected to endure. A caring and patient family, a responsive medical team and his faith helped him to get through his treatment. He said he went from lying in a bed in pain to playing for his beloved bluegrass band, the Dunbar Boys, in just eight months.
“Jennifer looks forward to sharing her story of faith and hope,” Belluck said. “Her story will help others realize that there is some hope with mesothelioma, and there is life with mesothelioma.”
