South Mississippi Veteran Donates Funds For Purple Heart Memorial

A South Mississippi man funded a Purple Heart Memorial being unveiled Tuesday in Gulfport.

Officials will break ground at 10 a.m. at the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor next to the Hard Rock Casino construction.

Local veteran George Higginbotham donated the $80,000 needed to build the memorial. Higginbotham was a private in the U-S Marine Corps. He fought in Okinawa and was wounded.

Higginbotham formerly owned a seafood processing facility and shrimp boats. He sold his business interests and is using some of the money to build the memorial.

He also designed the 10-foot high central granite piece that will display etched art work of all branches of service in a combat situation.

That scheduling quirk may give field turf crews just enough time to get War Memorial Stadium ready for the September 8 home opener. The wet weather in South Mississippi is placing quite the burden on construction workers as they attempt to complete stadium renovations. The project was suppose to be finished before the beginning of Pascagoula's football season.
