JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Tylertown man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing his girlfriend's 16-month-old daughter.

James Dustin Lowery, 28, pleaded guilty to felony child abuse and manslaughter in Walthall County Circuit Court Monday, according to Attorney General Jim Hood.

Hood said Lowery was taking care of his girlfriend's daughter when she became unresponsive and was taken to the emergency room. The child's cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma to the head.

Lowery gave conflicting reports as to how the child was injured including that she fell and hit her head on a bench, she fell from a chair and hit her head on cement and that she simply became unresponsive as the two watched TV, according to Hood.

Lowery was sentenced to 40 years for felony child abuse and 20 years suspended for manslaughter. He was also ordered to pay $1,000 to the Mississippi Crime Victims' Compensation Fund, a $1,000 fine and serve five years post release supervision.
