Snow slams into central Mississippi - - The News for South Mississippi

Snow slams into central Mississippi

Posted: Updated:

More snow is falling in Jackson, Mississippi this morning than in Chicago, Illinois.

As much as four inches of snow is forecast for the central part of the Magnolia state, before this winter blast finally moves east.  Because of the snow, and the treacherous driving conditions around Jackson, Gov. Phil Bryant has told state offices to remain closed until 10:00 this morning.

If you watched Good Morning Mississippi this morning, you saw much of that snow.  We used MDOT cameras to take a tour of the areas being bombarded by the winter weather.  Those cameras showed a winter wonderland as far south as Hattiesburg.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for much of north Alabama and central Mississippi. Forecasters say parts of both states could get from 1 inch to 2 inches of snow. Snow in Alabama could continue possibly into Friday.

Some areas of Alabama have received as much as 6 inches of rain since Sunday.  Forecasters also say north Georgia, including areas of metro Atlanta, could get ice and snow Thursday.

Ironically, the snow in central Mississippi is falling just as the sun is making its first appearance in south Mississippi since last week.
