Alcohol flying off the shelves in Greene County

GREENE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Beer and wine are now flying off the shelves at Piggly Wiggly in Greene County. After more than 30 years of being dry, Greene County residents voted in November to allow the sale of beer and light wine.

"I didn't think it was going to pass because of this little town right here, but I am glad they did allow it," resident Mitch Mitchell said.

In less than a month, nine businesses have received alcohol permits and two others have applied in the cities and county.

"This has really been a big boost for our store," said Piggly Wiggly Manager Richard Hale. "Now that we offer this, people can come here and shop and get what they want."

The owners of Main Street Quick Stop even put up posters to let folks know they now carry alcohol, which has helped business in more ways than one.

"Yes, ma'am, we have seen an increase in sales on the inside and gas," said store owner Dwayne Dunnam.

The customers said it is also a convenience having light beer and wine on the store shelves now. They say beforehand they would have to travel up to 30 miles just for a six pack.

"By the time you pay for your gas and your beer, you're spending $40," Mitchell said.

"You know how much tax revenue leaves this county because people drive to Alabama and other places?" one customer asked. "That is where this tax revenue goes."

But there are still some in the community who disagree, due to religious reasons and fear of alcohol related accidents. The folks buying and selling alcohol say they understand those concerns.

"We are doing a service for the people who want it, and for the people who don't want it, they don't have to buy it," Hale said.
