LSU hosts Bethune Cookman Saturday in final non-conference game

From LSU Sports

BATON ROUGE – The 8-2 LSU men's basketball team plays its final non-conference game of the 2012-13 season Saturday afternoon when it faces Bethune Cookman at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Tip time is 12:30 p.m. and the game will not be televised. The game will be broadcast on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network (Eagle 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge and in the GeauxZone at LSUsports.net.)

Bethune Cookman is 5-9 on the season.

The Tigers will open Southeastern Conference play on Wednesday at Auburn.

Coach Johnny Jones announced on Thursday at the media session that Johnny O'Bryant III is questionable for the game on Saturday, but point guard Anthony Hickey is expected to dress after sitting out the Houston Baptist game.

"We're excited and looking forward to Saturday's game for a lot of reasons," said Coach Jones. "One, it gets us an opportunity to get back out there on the floor. I think our guys have done a tremendous job. On New Year's Day, we had one of our better and most spirited practices. I was really pleased with the effort. After Saturday, it moves us just that much closer to conference play, which we are really looking forward to. It will be a great challenge for us. We are hopeful that Johnny O'Bryant III will be back on the floor. He hasn't played or practiced with us since the Marquette game. We are looking forward to hopefully getting him back on the floor in the near future. We are not sure if we'll have him for Saturday's game or not right now at this moment. Anthony (Hickey) has been practicing with us. He has been giving us a great effort. I look forward to getting him back on the floor on Saturday. I know he will have a smooth transition back out there on the floor. I know that it's something that he's looking forward to as well."

If O'Bryant III cannot play, then Shavon Coleman is expected to get his third start coming off his fourth double double against Houston Baptist on Dec. 28. Coleman leads the team in scoring at 14.1 points per game. The rest of the starting lineup is expected to be Andrew Del Piero at center (4.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.7 bpg) with Andre Stringer (12.1 ppg, 2.2 apg), Charles Carmouche (9.1 ppg, 3.6 apg) and Corban Collins (5.2 ppg, 1.6 ppg) at the guards.

The Wildcats under second year coach Gravelle Craig has two players in double figures – Adrien Coleman at 18.1 ppg, who leads the MEAC in scoring with double figures every game and a triple double vs. Webber; and, Kevin Dukes (11.0 ppg) who is the school's all-time 3-point leader.

"We try to utilize our non-conference schedule, for the most part, to really prepare ourselves for the conference," Jones said." It gives us an opportunity to tweak things offensively, try to really get in our rotations and find out what's our best combination are at times. That's what we utilize it for moving into conference play. We're hopeful that we're closer to being set and knowing exactly what we're going to get from each guy, and how we tend to play. I think this will be good for us. I think we've done that throughout this non-conference season."
