WLOX Editorial: There is much work remaining to secure our country's economic future

Posted: Updated:

We need to thank our elected U.S. Representatives and Senators from keeping us from going over the fiscal cliff, which could have resulted in a major blow to our country's fragile economy. This latest political showdown shows just how politically divided our nation is.

Most Americans wanted something done in Congress weeks before the New Year's deadline. Political differences from both parties kept that from happening. While a solution was reached, our elected officials also put off some important fiscal decisions.

In just two months, we will face another fiscal showdown when the two month delay in the federal spending cut deadline is again on the front burner along with the country's $16.4 trillion debt limit.

So while we started 2013 without falling over the fiscal cliff, there is much work remaining to secure our country's economic future. That includes finding ways to make sure Social Security and Medicare are funded for future generations.

Our hope is that the two dominant political parties will finally put the country first and solve all of the pending major fiscal problems.  If they don't, we will continue to be on this economic roller-coaster which none of us wants to ride.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
