Marie Wicks is now in Las Vegas. Marie is Miss Mississippi, and is in Vegas to compete in the Miss America pageant January 12th.
"I do not believe it is already here," we heard Marie say with a smile on her face, as she got out of her car at Gulfport/Biloxi International late Wednesday afternoon.
There is a lot of preparation that goes into something like this, but Marie is more than ready.
"Right now, I just feel so thankful to have this experience to go to Miss America," she said before boarding her flight.
Marie certainly won't be alone out there. The valedictorian at Ocean Springs High School a few years back, comes from a very close knit family. Her mom, Caroline, and younger sister, Lizzy, flew out to Las Vegas with her Wednesday night. Her grandmother, father and brother, will all be joining them next week.
But that's not all. Marie should have as many as 50 friends and family making the trip to cheer her on.
"To have all of my dear friends and family to support me, that means more than words can say," she said.
Just like Marie, Lizzy was also valedictorian at Ocean Springs High. To say she is excited about watching her sister compete at Miss America, would be an understatement.
"This is going to be exhilarating for me," Lizzy said. "My sister has worked so hard for this, and I will be there supporting her the whole way."
Along with a lot of other family, Marie's cousin Olivia Eustice will also be at Planet Hollywood encouraging Marie on the night of the finals.
"It will be just amazing," Olivia told us. "It is just great, I am so proud of Marie."
If Marie does come home with the crown, she will become the fifth Miss America from the state of Mississippi. You can watch the pageant on WLOX the evening of January 12th.
Jeff Lawson will be in Las Vegas all week as Marie competes in the preliminary events as well as the finals. You can catch his updates on WLOX.com and our WLOX Facebook page.
