(WMC-TV) – The US Marshal's office revealed a New Albany couple charged with their child's death and animal cruelty has been on the run for years. Now their trail has run cold.
Ramon and Janet Barreto are accused of manslaughter in their adopted daughter's death, abusing eight other small children, and running a puppy mill in North Mississippi.
And investigators say they may be up to some of their old criminal acts.
We've shown you hundreds of dogs living in filth and told you about Janet and Ramon Baretto's eight adopted children found abused and malnourished. All discovered after another adopted 2-year-old died with signs of sexual assault and blunt force trauma in May of 2008. The couple was charged, bonded out and fled to Mexico.
Then chief deputy Jimmy Edwards is now sheriff of Union County where the eight other children were found.
"It was one of the hardest cases I've ever tried to work," he said. "This particular little boy, he just, you know the way that he looked at me."
The sheriff adopted one of the little boys, who is now a healthy 8-year-old.
"It had gotten harder and harder to take him back," Edwards said.
The Marshal's office alerted Action News Thursday that the two were recently seen in California, but now could be anywhere - including Mississippi.
They've changed everything from names to their appearance. Investigators say they haven't changed their ways. It's believed they're selling puppies again and talk about wanting a child. Something Edwards says is the last thing they need.
"We're just trying to get him caught and bring them back to Mississippi to face justice for what they done," he said.
There is a 25 hundred dollar reward each for Janet and Ramon Barreto. Information is confidential.
If you know anything call the U.S. Marshal's office.
