BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -
Mississippi Surge head coach Jeff Bes received a Christmas gift from his players in the form of a win the day after Christmas.
Surge goalie Kiefer Smiley was up to the task, stopping all 31 shots by the Mississippi RiverKings. The victory gives Smiley a 5-6-1 overall won-loss record.
The Surge cracked the RiverKings net at 18:01 of the first period. Jeff Grant slapped the puck past the RiverKings goalie. The puck sailed across the line, before a RiverKings player used his stick to slap the puck out of the net. The Surge led 1-nothing.
The Surge added a power-play goal at 2:44 of the second period. B.J. Crum delivered a perfect assist to Branden Kosolofsky who was on the right side of the RiverKings net and popped the puck into the goal.
The Surge improve to 11-9-1 while the RiverKings dropped to 11-10-3.
The Surge travel to Huntsville Friday night, at Pensacola Saturday and return inside the Mississippi Coast Coliseum hosting the Louisiana IceGators Sunday afternoon at 3:05.
